Volunteers - Volunteer Opportunities

Patient Contact:

Outpatient Surgery Ambassador – Volunteers greet the patient and family and assist them both before and after surgery as well as escorting family members between the waiting room, procedure rooms and recovery.

Surgery Waiting Room Assistant – Volunteers greet the patients and sign in families as they arrive for surgery. Throughout the admit and surgery process they oversee the waiting room, help families with any of their needs and assist physicians as they consult with families after surgery.

Child Life Playroom – The playrooms are staffed by volunteers who supervise and facilitate play activities for patients. There are three playrooms for our younger patients and a teen room for our older patients.

Pediatric Sitter – Volunteers spend time one-on-one with a patient as requested by staff or family. The volunteer may be asked to sit with a young baby or play a game with an older child. This service allows the families to take a break and know their loved one with be with a caring volunteer.

Discharge Escort – When patients are ready to go home, volunteers assist by taking them to the front entrance of the hospital where they meet their families.

No Patient Contact:

PJ’s Place Gift Shop – The all volunteer staff assists customers in selecting the perfect gift for their loved one, stock merchandise and deliver gifts to patients. All income from the gift shop is donated to the hospital.

Family Resource Library – The Junior League of Tulsa supervises the library where families and patients can find up-to-date information to answer health questions, books for children and adults on many health topics, use available computers or check out videos and games for patients to enjoy in their room.

Information Desk – Volunteers help welcome all visitors to the Children’s Hospital, assist visitors to sign in and receive a name badge after the patient room number is confirmed. They also help direct people to the areas they are visiting.

Admissions Desk – As patients and their families arrive at the hospital for surgery, volunteers assist with the check in process. After staff has completed the patient file, volunteers escort the families to the surgery admit waiting room.

Inpatient Unit Assistant – Unit volunteers greet families and visitors as they enter the unit, provide comfort cart items to families and assist the unit secretary and staff with clerical needs of the unit.

Tour Guide –Volunteers coordinate tours of the Children’s Hospital for communities groups as requested.

Child Life Group Activity Coordinator –Many outside groups make one-time visits to the Children’s Hospital to bring gifts and do activities for the children. Volunteer assistance is given to the Child Life Specialists in planning these activities and visits.
